The OpenAI API enables you to integrate its powerful AI models into WP AI Writer. This tutorial will guide you through setting up your OpenAI API account and getting it ready for use.
Step 1: Visit the OpenAI API Website
- Go to https://openai.com/api/.
- Click on Start Building. If you already have an OpenAI account, select Sign in.
Step 2: Create an Account
- Create an account – Follow the on-screen instructions to create an account. You can sign up with your email, Google account, or Microsoft account for convenience.
- Verify Your Email – After signing up, OpenAI will send a verification email. Check your inbox, open the email, and follow the link to confirm your email address.
Step 3: Set Up Payment Details
- After signing in, follow the instructions or navigate to the Billing section in your OpenAI account dashboard.
- Add a Payment Method – For API usage beyond the free trial, you’ll need to enter payment details. This ensures you can access and use OpenAI’s various models based on your subscription level.
- Familiarize yourself with Usage Limits and Pricing. OpenAI provides different pricing options based on usage, so you can control spending and usage. - In the dashboard, go to the API Keys section.

- This is the key you should enter as your API key for OpenAI in WP AI Writer. To do so, navigate to the Settings > Add LLM API Provider sectionn, and select OpenAI. Add your Api key below, and save.
- Best Practice: Avoid sharing this key publicly, as it grants access to your API resources.
Step 5: Test Your API Key
- Once you have added OpenAI as an LLM Provider in WP AI Writer, you should see it in your list of LLM Providers (in the Settings > LLM Providers). Click on “Test Connection” to confirm your API key works and WP AI Writer can use it to create content. Optionally, you may also click on “Test LLM” to check if the LLM replies to a simple question “Are you ready for work?”.
- After a successful response, your OpenAI API account is ready for use in your WP AI Writer!
